The Familiar Gender
Just another family
We ventured cross country to photograph many families for the project, we are doing it again! If you would like to participate contact us! TheGenderProject@gmail.com.
Family
We have been conditioned to view this word “family” as a female mother married to a male father and their conceived children. Today, we are still conditioned and pressured at home, in school, books, school, public, media, medicine to be and or view the proper definition of a family is a heterosexual couple with conceived kids when less than 1/3 of households reflect that.
For instance:
- Adopted family
- Divorced family
- Foster family
- Unmarried family
- Single mother and kids
- Single father and kids
- Step family
- Gay family
- Couple
- Friend family
- Non-family
The Gender Projects The Familiar Gender “family is what you make it” is a photo study of groups of people who identify as family. It will allow you access to the effective conditioning your brain has about the quality of each family. Do you automatically qualify a family as adopted, foster, step, or same sex if they do not appear to be “traditional?" Have you thought about why? or where that came from?
Gender specific challenges our thinking around gender and words in a much broader sennse. The Gender Specific Experiment is a simple interactive way to experience our assumptions.
