At Face Value

Participants in The Gender Project

At Face Value’s purpose is to help answer this question:

What is it with gender anyway?

It creates a safe space for people of all ages, races, denominations, conditioning, and judgments to simply experience a variety gender expressions ranging from the super feminine, to androgynous, to super male and everything in between. It allows us to analyze each face without risk of being judged ourselves. It helps recognize the visual conditioning society has placed on us about how gender should look in order to be accepted. At Face Value is designed to educate in a simple, fun and real way, and has been invited into schools and colleges, and staff trainings on gender sensitivity and acceptance. Please contact The Gender Project if your school or establishment is interested!

The At Face Value installation, when seen in gallery form, is 100 images of gender expression accompanied by a stream of information. This information further challenges our unconscious gender stereotypes and helps us realize the fundamental inequality we all have been taught in regards to gender. It helps open up our minds and promotes conversation about current and past events. Our Facebook page is full of people talking about gender in sports, art, parenting, schools, colleges, children, relationships, workplace, television, etc, and it all stems from the At Face Value information stream.

You should also check out the Gender Specific installation page it parallels At Face Value challenging your gender conditioning on social titles. More projects and information can be found in the Installations page.
