About The Gender Project
People at the Gender Project Gallery
The Gender Project is a visual and informational exploration through what it means to have gender in today’s society. The Artist and Founder, Krista Handfield, created the project both as a passionate reaction to society’s constant judgment of a person’s identity and as an effort to show that all genders, gender expressions, gender identities and gender combinations are valid and a thriving part of our community. It allows everyone to see, feel and think about our social conditioning called gender through images and information that mirrors our actual world.
The project is for everyone. It is for parents who tell their sons not to “cry like a girl”, fathers who fight for custody of their children, girls who would like to be called an athlete not a “tomboy,” mothers who teach girls to like pink and have long hair, marriages that do not reflect traditional spousal gender roles, boys who want to wear make-up, families who are not blood related, schools who do not know how to support transgender students, opinions and law makers that exclude rights to same sex couples, children whose parent changed sex, and you. Every person in this world struggles with our gender and we judge everyone else’s gender every single day. Why?
